May 18, 2009 Message from Global Messenger Richard Mendola and Amy Wooley (Speech Coach)
Global Messengers are Special Olympics athletes who are formally trained in public speaking and media interview techniques, in order to help spread the word about Special Olympics, educate the community, and recruit potential athletes, volunteers, families, and sponsors. On April 17 -19, Richard Mendola, a Seminole County Special Olympics athlete, and Amy Wooley, his Speech Coach, attended Global Messenger training at the State Headquarters in Clermont with eight other athlete/speech coach pairs from across the state. As part of the training, the athletes toured WESH-TV (NBC) in Orlando, watched a live broadcast, and practiced in-studio interviews with anchor (and SOFL Board Member) Jim Payne. Richard and Amy enjoyed the training and are eager to spread the word about Seminole County Special Olympics.
Amy says of her commitment as Richard’s speech coach: “My inspiration…I’ve been involved in Toastmasters for 12 years and my brother, Mike, was a Special Olympics athlete when I was growing up. Richard will make a great Global Messenger because he loves Special Olympics, loves to talk, and can be rather persuasive. For Richard, participating in Global Messenger training and becoming a Global Messenger was a dream come true – something he has wanted to do for quite some time”!
