ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
JACOB GROVES
Basketball and
Volleyball
Jacob plays basketball
and volleyball, and may soon participate in other sports
as well. He is a gifted athlete - completely
ambidextrous and deceptively fast. But that isn't the
amazing part of his story.
At age five, he was
diagnosed as autistic. Three years later, he was
discovered to have Stage 3 Hodgkin's lymphoma. The
disease had spread through three-quarters of his torso
and the situation was dire. As he underwent
chemotherapy, he went completely bald and weighed less
than fifty pounds. We came very close to losing him. But
thanks to the Lord and the wonderful people at the
University of Arizona Pediatric Cancer Center, he came
through and has now been cancer-free for eleven
years.
Jacob loves sports, and we are so thankful
to Special Olympics that he gets a chance to use his
talents and have such fun. He enjoys not only competing,
but also being with other athletes and working together
as a team. To see the boy who was once so frail he could
not sit up, now running and jumping with unbridled joy,
we thank God. Every day with Jacob is another
blessing. |

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS
Special Olympics Seminole County
relies greatly on assistance from Sponsors. They are
always in need, not only to provide financial help, but
to offer safe and productive training facilities to our
athletes. Without the generous donations of many
organizations, our athletes would not have the
facilities, equipment, volunteers or funds to
train and compete on a year-round
basis for free. We all appreciate
everyone's support!
|
|
The mission of Special Olympics is to
provide year-round sports training and competition in a
variety of Olympic-type sports for persons eight years
of age and older with intellectual disabilities, giving
them the opportunities to develop physical fitness,
demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a
sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their
families, other Special Olympics Athletes, and the
community. To Learn More About Special
Olympics and it's History Click
